Bassett's Career-High Propels Lakers to 69-60 Victory in Detroit

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's basketball team (7-9, 6-2 GLIAC) came away with a strong 69-60 victory over the Wayne State Warriors (7-8, 4-4 GLIAC) after a 27-point performance from Kemon Bassett (Detroit, Mich.).

The Warriors would jump out to an early 7-2 lead, but multiple baskets from Bassett kept the Lakers in the game before Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) gave his team a slim lead down low. Both teams would then go back and forth for several points before the Warriors started to pull out ahead, but Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) was there to cut the lead in half with a three-pointer. Bassett would then hit a three of his own as the Lakers closed out the opening half on a 16-3 lead to take a 38-31 lead into the halftime break.

Wayne State was able to fight back early in the second half to take a slim lead, but a Perkins dunk tied up the score at 47-47 and brought the momentum back to the Lakers as it opened up a 9-0 Laker run to go back up 54-47. The Warriors would make one final push, but David Wren (Ypsilanti, Mich.) was there to answer with an and-one as the Lakers held on for the 69-60 victory in Detroit.

Bassett led the way with a career-high 27-point performance in his home-city of Detroit, and Wren and Perkins would join him in double-digit scoring with 11 and ten points, respectively, off the bench. Meanwhile, Okerlund would lead all players in rebounds (14) and assists (6) with his 14 rebounds setting a new career-high.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they take on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
