Laker Awards: Nigel Colvin, Terry McDermott Male Athlete Award

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Nigel Colvin has been awarded the 2019-20 Terry McDermott Award as the department's top first year male athlete, as voted on by the LSSU head coaches. 

The Terry McDermott Award is given to the "first year male varsity letter winner at LSSU, who in the opinion of the coaches and the Athletic Awards Committee exhibits outstanding dedication, determination, self-sacrifice, and inspiration to Laker Athletics."

Colvin, a business management major from Detroit, Mich., appeared in all 28 games for the Lakers, while starting the last 12 games of the season. Colvin averaged 23.2 minutes per game in his first collegiate season. The freshman guard averaged 11.0 points per game this season, totaling 307 points. Colvin ranked second on the team in both point categories. Among Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) players, Colvin ranked first among all freshmen in points per game and total points.

During his rookie campaign, Colvin recorded a total of 106 field goals, which ranked second on the team, on a 39.8 shooting percentage. The freshman led the Lakers this season in three-pointers made with 54. Colvin scored more field goals and three-pointers than any other first year player in the GLIAC this season. 

In 28 games, Colvin registered 70 rebounds, which ranked fifth on the team, while adding 45 assists and 18 steals. He ranked third among his teammates in both assists and steals. 

Colvin netted a double-digit point total in 15 games this season, including eight games with 15 or more points. The freshman posted 20 points or more in three games including a career-high 28 points on Jan. 16 in a 102-81 loss at Michigan Tech.

This year's nominees for the 2019-20 Terry McDermott Male Athlete Award included Callum McKay (men's golf), Louis Boudon (men's hockey), Juho Kantola (men's tennis) and Ryan Reiniche (men's track & field).
