Men's Basketball Set for a Rematch with Upper Peninsula Rivals at Home this Weekend

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team will play their final home games of the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. as they face the Wildcats from Northern Michigan and on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3:00 p.m. against the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Lakers will face these UP rivals in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games in the Ronald "Bud" Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers (10-13, 7-8 GLIAC)

The Lakers have recently been pushing to gain a spot in the GLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament that will be held in March. The Lakers currently sit tied for the final spot with Ashland, as  both teams have 21 conference points. The Lakers will need to finish their season strong in order to grab a spot in the 2019 GLIAC Tournament. 

The Lakers gained some valuable points this weekend with an impressive win against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Lakers came out on top of the Cardinals by a score of 82-66 thanks to their explosive scoring in the second half. The Lakers were led in points by freshman guard Nigel Colvin who had 24 in the contest. The Lakers season leader in points, senior Ke'Montrece Collins recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds to seal off a double-double for the game.  C.J. Robinson led his squad with 6 assists on the day. 

Previously in the season, the Lakers fell short to the Wildcats and the Huskies on a road trip in mid-January. The Lakers will look to get even with both of these rivals this weekend. 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (11-12, 8-7 GLIAC)

The Wildcats went 1-1 on the weekend as they picked up a victory against Wisconsin Parkside but lost a close game to Purdue-Northwest in overtime. The Wildcats are currently sitting in third place in the GLIAC North division. Northern Michigan is a mere three points ahead of the Lakers in the conference standings. The Wildcats have been led on the season by senior guard Sam Taylor who has 281 on the season. Northern Michigan is coached by the rookie head coach Matt Majkrzak. 

Michigan Tech Huskies (16-10, 10-5 GLIAC)

The Michigan Tech Huskies were victorious in both of their recent matchups. The Huskies are averaging an impressive 80.5 points per contest as well as an 42.9% three point percentage. The Huskies also average 18.1 assists per game. Senior forward Kyle Monroe is leading Michigan Tech with an average of 21.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Michigan Tech's coach is Kevin Luke who is in his 26th season at the helm for the Huskies.

Following this matchup against these GLIAC and UP rivals, the Lakers will travel to Wisconsin Parkside for a game on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 8:30 p.m. and Purdue Northwest on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3:00 p.m.
