Freshman Nigel Colvin Scores 28 but Lakers Fall to GLIAC, and Upper Peninsula, Rival Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team recorded a 102-81 loss to the Michigan Tech Huskies in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) on Thursday night in Houghton, Mich. 

In the first half, the Lakers fell behind to the Huskies early but kept the score within reach. C.J. Robinson brought the Lakers within six points at the 13:07 mark of the half when he made a free throw attempt. However, Michigan Tech offense's proved to be unstoppable in the next few minutes of action as the Huskies held a 20 point lead with 5:56 left to play in the half (32-12). 

The Lakers would respond with nine straight points sparked by a three-point jump shot from Brandon Allen. With just over four minutes left in the half, the Lakers cut the Huskies lead to 11 points (32-11). Michigan Tech would take a 15 point advantage into the second half, leading 43-28.

The Huskies would build onto their lead in the early stages of the second half, ahead by 22 points after four minutes of play (53-31). Freshman Nigel Colvin, who had seven points in the first half, would score nine straight points for the Lakers to bring his team closer to evening the score (55-40). At the ten minute mark of the half, the Lakers trailed by 25 points (73-48). Colvin would add six more points in the next couple of minutes of play, sinking two three-point shots. The game would conclude with the Huskies offense controlling play, as the final score ended 102-81 with Michigan Tech taking the win.

Despite the Lakers loss, the game saw a remarkable 28-point performance from freshman guard Colvin, who went 10-for-14 off the bench. Colvin had 21 points in the second half in his best career game as Laker. Justin Fischer (12 points) and Ashton Sherrell (10 points) rounded out the top three scorers for the Lakers in the game.

Following the afternoon game against Northern Michigan on Saturday, the Lakers will return home for a pair of conference games on Thursday, Jan. 23 against Purdue Northwest at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 25 against Wisconsin Parkside at 3:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Thursday's game will include a halftime ceremony recognizing the Laker student-athlete who earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester. Mascot day will be held at the Laker basketball games on Saturday.
