Men's Basketball Hits the Road for a Pair of GLIAC Games Against SVSU and Northwood

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team is set to play a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games this week on Thursday, Jan. 9 and Saturday, Jan. 11. Thursday's game is against Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Mich. at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday's game is against Northwood Timberwolves in Midland, Mich. at 3:00 p.m.

The Lakers (6-7, 3-2 GLIAC)

The Lakers will look to get back in the win column this weekend, as the team's most recent game was a 67-65 loss to Grand Valley State. With the loss, the Lakers overall record dropped to 6-7 overall and a 3-2 mark in GLIAC play. Lake Superior is led by senior forward Ke'Montrece Collins who ranks fifth in the conference in points per game in GLIAC matches (19.4) as well as ninth in the conference in overall points per game (16.2) this season. Collins also leads the Lakers in rebounds per game with 7.6. Freshman Nigel Colvin has been a solid addition to the lineup this season as he has averaged 9.7 points per game this season, and 11.2 points per game in conference games. Sophomores C.J. Robinson (9.7 ppg) and Justin Fischer (4.2 rebounds per game, 4.3 assists per game) have been steady players for the Lakers in their second season.

The Lakers are averaging 74.5 points per game this season with a 42.7 shooting percentage and 33.1 rebounds per game. 

Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals (10-3, 4-1 GLIAC)

The Saginaw Valley State Cardinals head into Thursday's game on a six game win streak, with four of those being conference victories. The Cardinals are led by sophomore guard Myles Belyeu and junior guard Malik Ellison who both rank within the top 10 point per game scorers in the GLIAC. Belyeu, who ranks second in the GLIAC with 20.1 points per game this season, also leads SVSU in rebounds with 6.8 per game this year. Ellison's 17.1 points per game this season is the seventh best total in the conference. 

Saginaw Valley is averaging 78.6 points per game in 2019-20 with a 46.7 shooting percentage and 36.3 rebounds per game. 

Northwood University Timberwolves (7-6, 2-3 GLIAC)

The Northwood Timberwolves are coming off a split of last weekend's GLIAC games, and will host Ferris State on Thursday night before playing the Lakers on Saturday. The Timberwolves are led by senior guard Trey McBride who ranks first on the team with 11.8 points per game while his 4.8 rebounds per game is good for second on the team. Sophomore guard has also been a solid contributor for Northwood as he has averaged 10.1 points per game. Senior forward Bruno Solomun leads the Timberwolves in rebounds this season with 6.6 per game. 

Northwood is averaging 67.2 points per game this season with a 41.9 shooting percentage and 36.5 rebounds per game.

The Lakers will continue the stretch of road games next weekend as the team heads to the western Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. Lake State will play the Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a game on Saturday, Jan. 18 against the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m.
