Men's Basketball Looks to Continue GLIAC Success in Saturday Afternoon Game Against No. 17 GVSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Superior State men's basketball team will open a five game streak of road games on Saturday, Jan. 4 as the Lakers travel to Allendale, Mich. to take on the No. 17 Grand Valley State University Lakers. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match up is set for a 3:00 p.m. tip off. 

The Lakers (6-6, 3-1 GLIAC)

The Lakers head into their first conference road game of the season coming off a win against the Davenport Panthers on Thursday night in Sault Ste. Marie. With the 60-57 win, the Lakers overall record improved to 6-6 and are 3-1 against GLIAC opponents. Lake Superior is led by senior forward Ke'Montrece Collins who ranks ninth in the conference with 17.0 points per game this season while his 7.6 rebounds per game is good for fifth in the GLIAC. In the Lakers most recent win, Collins ranked first on the team with 19 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Nigel Colvin ranks second on the team with an average of 9.4 points per game while sophomore C.J. Robinson (9.0 ppg) has also been a steady contributor for the Lakers. Sophomore guard Justin Fischer leads the team in assists per game with 4.5 and ranks third on the team in rebounds 4.3.

The Lakers are averaging 76.6 points per game this season with a 43.2 shooting percentage and 32.8 rebounds per game. 

Grand Valley State University Lakers (10-2, 3-1 GLIAC)

The GVSU Lakers seven game win streak was snapped in their last game, as the team fell to GLIAC rival, Ferris State by a score of 85-73. Despite the loss, the Lakers still hold an impressive 10-2 overall record and a 3-1 GLIAC record. Grand Valley is led by junior Jake Van Tubbergen who ranks fourth in the GLIAC in points per game with 19.3 with a 54.1 shooting percentage. Van Tubbergen also leads all players in the GLIAC in rebounds per game as he has averaged 10.4 this season. In addition to Van Tubbergen, the Lakers have three players who average 10 or more points per game this season: Jeremiah Ferguson (12.7 ppg), Christian Negron (11.2 ppg), and Jayden Hodgson (10.6 ppg). 

Grand Valley is averaging 76.8 points per game in 2019-20 with a 46.5 shooting percentage and 38.3 rebounds per game.

The Lakers will play a pair of road games next weekend against Saginaw Valley and Northwood. The game against SVSU is set for an 8:00 p.m. start on Thursday, Jan. 8 and the game against Northwood is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. tip off on Saturday, Jan. 11.
