Men's Basketball Drops Competitive Game Against No. 14/15 UIndy

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team loss a close game against the No. 14/15 Indianapolis Greyhounds by a final score of 73-70 on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

In the first half, the Lakers and the Greyhounds were evenly matched through the first five minutes of play as the score was tied at nine. Around the halfway point of the first half, the Lakers would begin to build their lead and would see a streak of three pointers made by Ke'Montrece Collins, C.J. Robinson and Brandon Allen to open a nine point advantage over Indianapolis. The first half would close with the Lakers ahead by 14 points as the final few minutes of play saw Justin Fischer go two-for-two on free throws and freshman Nigel Colvin make a pair of three-point shots. 

The Lakers would extend their lead to 16 points before the Greyhounds began their comeback. UIndy would trade points with the Lakers for most of the second half slowly shrinking the Lakers lead. By the 10:49 mark of the second half, the Lakers would still hold an eleven point advantage over the Greyhounds (57-48). The Greyhounds would then go on a nine point run to bring the score within two (57-55) with just over eight minutes left in play. 

Ashton Sherrell would make two free throw shots with 5:14 left in the game to once again give the Lakers a five point lead in the game and with three minutes left, Brandon Allen would make a three-point jump shot to put the Lakers ahead by seven points (68-61). 

In the final 2:50 seconds of regulation play, Indianapolis would score 12 points to clinch a 73-70 win against the Lakers. 

Collins led the Lakers with 17 points in the game as well as six rebounds against Indy. Colvin ranked second on the team with 16 points as he went five-for-eight, including four three pointers in the game. The Lakers also saw strong performances from Robinson (12 points), Sherrell (11 points) and Allen (nine points). Justin Fischer led the team with five assists.

The Lakers will close out the calendar year with a non-conference game against Lewis on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
