Men's Basketball Looks to Stay Perfect in the GLIAC Against Ferris State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Superior State University men's basketball team will look to continue its early success in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play as the team team hosts the No. 11 Ferris State Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium this Saturday, Dec. 14. 

The Lakers

The Lakers enter the weekend with a perfect 2-0 record in GLIAC play after upsetting the No. 10 Ashland Eagles by a 99-69 final score and following up with a 67-63 win against the Wayne State Warriors at home. With the pair of conference wins, the Lakers record this season has improved to 5-3 overall and the team is currently riding a four-game win streak, dating back to Nov. 23. The Lakers are led by the reigning GLIAC North Division Player of the Week, senior forward Ke'Montrece Collins. Collins averages 17.5 points per game this season to lead the Lakers and posted a career high 29 points in the team's win over Ashland. Collins also leads the team in rebounds per game (7.3). The Lakers have also seen strong performances from freshman Xander Okerlund, who posted an impressive 31 points in the Ashland game and ranks second on the team with 10.5 points per game, and sophomore Justin Fischer who leads the team with four assists per game and is second among the Lakers with 4.4 rebounds per game. 

The Lakers are averaging 78.8 points per game this season with a 44.4 shooting percentage and 33.8 rebounds per game. 

#11 Ferris State Bulldogs (12-1, 2-0 GLIAC)

The Bulldogs are ranked eleventh nationally following wins over Wayne State (96-86) and Ashland (94-70) last weekend. Like the Lakers, Ferris State is undefeated in conference play and enters the Saturday game riding a four-game win streak. The Bulldogs are led by junior guard Walt Kelser who averages 18.0 points per game this season on a 45.8 shooting percentage. Ferris State has been strong on collecting rebounds this season as five players on the team average five or more rebounds per game, with Dorian Aluyi leading the way with 7.2 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State is averaging 90.4 points per game in 2019-20 with a 46.6 shooting percentage and 42.5 rebounds per game.

The Lakers will close out the calendar year with a non-conference game against No. 16 Indianapolis on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
