Lakers Come From Behind to Earn Second Straight GLIAC Win

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team closed out its first weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a 67-63 win over the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday, Dec. 7 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Through the first eight games of the season, the Lakers overall record stands at 5-3 and a perfect 2-0 in GLIAC contests. With back-to-back wins this weekend, the Lakers are on a four game win streak dating back to Nov. 23.

In the first half, the Warriors would build an early lead over the Lakers (18-10). The Lakers would tighten Wayne State's lead to two points (18-16) when freshman Nigel Colvin made a three pointer and drew a foul on the play, where he would score on all three attempts. 

The Lakers and Warriors would trade points through the rest of the first half but Wayne State would hold a seven point lead heading into halftime (35-28). 

Wayne State would score first in the second half to take a ten point lead over the Lakers but the Lakers would respond with a 13 point run to overtake the lead for the first time in the game. During the scoring run, the Lakers were led by senior forward Ke'Montrece Collins, who netted five points, and junior Jackson Schrameyer, who was a perfect four-for-four on free throws and added a layup. Freshman Xander Okerlund would then follow with a three-pointer to give the Lakers a four point advantage over the Warriors (45-41).

The Lakers were able to hold onto the lead and build onto it through the remaining ten minutes of the second half. Sophomore guard Justin Fischer would lead the way for the Lakers at the end of the game as he had eight points in the final few minutes of play. The Lakers would stay undefeated in conference play as the team recorded its second win in as many days by a final score of 67-63.

Collins would guide the Lakers to the win as he posted a double-double in the game as he notched 20 points and 15 rebounds. Fischer's strong game ended with a total of 16 points and four assists for Lake State. Off the bench, the Lakers had 19 points as Schrameyer registered 10 points while Colvin had nine points in the game.

The Lakers will host #23 Ferris State and a non-conference game against Indianapolis on December 14 and 17 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The game against Ferris State will be at 3:00pm and the game against Indianapolis will be at 7:00pm.
