Men's Basketball Drops Home Opener to Spring Arbor

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team fell to the Spring Arbor University Cougars by a final score of 75-63 in the team's home opener on Friday, Nov. 8 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Lakers overall record drops to 1-2 this season. 

1st Half

The Cougars came out swinging when guard Peyton Dewildt scored a three-pointer in the first thirteen seconds of the game to give the Cougars the lead. The Cougars would enjoy this lead the entire game. Near the halfway point of the first half, the score was 18-9 in favor of the Cougars. This would spark an eight point run from the Lakers to bring the score to 18-17 with five minutes left in the half. At the conclusion of the half, the score was 34-27 in favor of the Cougars. The Lakers would shoot 30% in the half compared to the Cougars 41.1%. 

2nd Half

To start the second half, Laker forward Ke'Montrece Collins drained a three pointer courtesy of guard Ashton Sherrel. The game would go back and forth for the next several minutes as both teams traded baskets until Laker Guard CJ Robinson made a quick layup. This would spark a seven point Laker scoring streak to tie the game at 39-39 with 14:51 left in the game. The Cougars would follow the Lakers run with several three pointers of their own. With five minutes left in the game, the Cougars would lead 62-51. The Lakers would respond when guard Justin FIscher made three straight free throws and a quick jumpshot. Within three minutes, the Lakers would surge back to make the score 64-59. As the game drew to a close, the Cougars pulled away with the victory. The final score was 75-63. The Lakers would shoot 36.1% in the game compared to the Cougars 44.4%. Helping the Cougars shooting percentage was their 38.1% three point shooting percentage. The Lakers would shoot only 16.7% from three. 

The Lakers were outrebounded by the Cougars 40-26. The Lakers would win the battle for turnovers 11-16. The Lakers leading scorer was Justin Fischer who had 13 points in the game. The Lakers leading rebounder was Ke'Montrece Collins who had six.

The Lakers will travel to Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah to participate in the Westminster Classic. The Lakers will face Dixie State on Friday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 pm and tournament host Westminster College on Saturday Nov. 23.
