Tim Cairnduff Hired as Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State University men's basketball Head Coach Steve Hettinga has announced the hiring of Tim Cairnduff as assistant coach.

Cairnduff will serve as the second assistant for the Lake State men's basketball program as well as the head coach of the Lake State JV men's basketball program. 

"We couldn't be more excited to have Tim back in our program," said Hettinga. "Coaching him, I always thought he would have a career in coaching if he ever chose that profession and we are lucky it is with us. He is truly a Laker through and through."

Cairnduff joins the Lakers in the coaching role following a collegiate career as a member of the team from 2014-2019. The former Lake guard was a member of the 2014-15 team that was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Champion and also qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Cairnduff was also a member of the 2017-18 squad that was an NCAA Tournament Qualifier.

Cairnduff will look to use his recent experience playing at the collegiate level and apply it to coaching this year's varsity and junior varsity teams. In his career with the Lakers, Cairnduff played in 75 games with 37 of them being starts, scoring 476 points with 147 assists in 1,553 career minutes played. During his senior season in 2018-19, Cairnduff set career-highs in numerous categories including starts with 26, points per game with 10.8, field goal percentage (48.3%), minutes per game with 31.2, three-point percentage (39.2%) and rebounds per game with 3.5.

Cairnduff concluded his playing career at Lake State by being named the 2018-19 recipient of the Bud Cooper Coaches Award. 

In addition to his playing career, Cairnduff also has experience in the business side of athletics as he has over four years of experience working at a variety of local golf courses. Cairnduff's most recent experience came as a pro-shop attendant at the Sault Ste. Marie Country Club in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. where he gained experience in planning and executing all professional tournaments and member events, specifically assisting in the financial side of planning. 

A 2019 graduate of Lake Superior State University, Cairnduff completed his bachelor's degree in criminal justice with an emphasis on law enforcement and a minor in homeland security. A Morley, Mich. native, Cairnduff currently resides in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 

The men's basketball team will host Rochester for an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
