Men's Basketball Falls to Michigan Tech 74-71

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's basketball had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 74-71 loss to Michigan Tech on Thursday night at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Lake Superior State (13-9, 9-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) and Michigan Tech (11-12, 6-10 GLIAC) played a tightly contested first half with the Lakers trailing 33-31 at halftime. 

Vvery time the Huskies would extend their lead in the second half, the Lakers would claw back to within striking distance. The Lakers trailed 69-58 with a little over five minutes remaining, before going on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two points with the score 69-67. In the final 10 seconds of regulation, Lake Superior State trailed 74-71 and had possession of the ball. Senior forward Blake Marquardt took a three-point shot, but the attempt would not fall and the Huskies held on for the victory. 

Sophomore forward Rog Stein tallied team highs in points (20) and rebounds (7). Junior guard Malek Adams and senior guard Tim Cairnduff added 18 and 13 points, respectively. 

The Lakers shot 46.6 percent from the floor, while the Huskies shot 50 percent from the field. The Huskies made eight three-pointers compared to two by the Lakers.

Lake Superior State made 15-of-24 free throw attempts and Michigan Tech converted 16-of-19 from the free throw line.

The Lakers continue play at home against Northern Michigan on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Bud Cooper Gymnasium. On Saturday, the Lakers will honor their graduating seniors as part of Senior Day. A ceremony will be held between the women's and men's games against Northern Michigan

The annual Laker Basketball Alumni Reunion is being held this weekend. On Saturday, all basketball alumni will be honored on the court during halftime.
