SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. – Blake Marquardt scored a career-high 29 points as Lake Superior State men's basketball defeated Wayne State 90-66 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Play on Thursday night at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
Marquardt, a senior forward, made 11-of-18 shots from the field and 7-of-14 from three-point range for a career-high 29 points. He scored 13 points in the first half and 16 in the second half. Marquardt's previous career high in points was 28, which he achieved in a 90-85 win at Findlay on Dec. 10, 2016.
Lake Superior State (12-8, 8-6 GLIAC) never trailed in the game and outscored Wayne State (5-14, 4-10 GLIAC) 49-28 in the first half. Redshirt sophomore Jackson Schrameyer, who finished the game with 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting, set the tone early in the first half with a couple of dunks for the Lakers and they never looked back. In the second half, the Laker lead grew to as many as 26 points as Lake State cruised to the 90-66 victory.
Junior guard Malek Adams joined Marquardt and Schrameyer in double figures in scoring. Adams tallied 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including a 3-of-4 performance from behind the three-point line.
The Lakers had a strong shooting performance – making 53.7 percent (36-of-67) of their shots from the field and 40.0 percent (12-of-30) from behind the arc. Lake Superior State limited Wayne State to 45.9 percent shooting (28-of-61) overall and 22.2 percent (2-of-9) on three-pointers.
Lake Superior State recorded 19 assists, while turning the ball over seven times and also forcing seven steals.
The Lakers continue play at home against No. 15 Ashland on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
