Men's Basketball Falls to Parkside 83-81

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's basketball suffered an 83-81 setback to Parkside in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Thursday night at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Lake Superior State (9-6, 5-4 GLIAC) and Parkside (8-7, 6-3 GLIAC) played to an 81-81 score through 38:58 of the game, but Parkside's Brandon Trimble hit a last-second shot to hand Lake Superior State the 83-81 defeat.

In the first half, the Lakers outscored the Rangers 45-40 to take a lead into halftime. Senior forward Blake Marquardt, freshman guard C.J. Robinson and sophomore forward Rog Stein each scored nine points in the first half for the Lakers, while junior guard Malek Adams and senior guard Tim Cairnduff each scored eight points.

However, the Lakers were unable to hold the lead in the second half as they were outscored 43-36 over the final 20 minutes of play. Adams scored 16 points in the second half to lead all Lakers with 24 points in the game, while Stein scored another nine points for a total of 18 in the game. Three of Adams' points came on a three-pointer that tied the game at 81-81 with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation. However, Trimble would then hit his buzzer-beater to hand the Lakers the 83-81 defeat.

Cairnduff and Marquardt were the other Lakers to score in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Stein paced the team in rebounding with eight, while Cairnduff and Adams tied for the team lead in assists (5).     

Adams has now eclipsed the 20-point plateau seven times this season, including in each of the last three games.

Parkside's Chavares Flanigan led all scorers with 32 points on 13-of-13 shooting.

Lake Superior State shot 48.4 percent from the floor and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) on three-point shots, while Parkside shot 50 percent overall and 70 percent (14-of-20) on three-pointers.

The Lakers return to action against Purdue Northwest on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
