SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's basketball continues Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference play with games at Upper Peninsula rivals, Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.
Lake Superior State (7-5, 3-3 GLIAC) plays Northern Michigan (8-5, 3-3 GLIAC) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Berry Events Center in Marquette, Michigan before facing Michigan Tech (7-6, 2-4 GLIAC) at 3 p.m. on Saturday at SDC Gym in Houghton, Michigan.
Last Time on the Court
Lake Superior State split a pair of GLIAC games last week — losing 82-60 at Davenport University on Thursday in Grand Rapids, Michigan and then winning in come-from-behind fashion 85-72 over Grand Valley State University on Saturday inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
In the win over GVSU, sophomore forward Rog Stein recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Stein went 8-of-10 from the free throw line and he also dished out four assists. Senior guard Tim Cairnduff and redshirt sophomore center Jackson Schrameyer scored 21 and 18 points, respectively. Schrameyer shot 4-of-6 from the field and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line, while Cairnduff shot 7-of-12 overall, including 2-of-5 from three-point range. Cairnduff also made five of his six free throw attempts.
Team Leaders
Junior guard Malek Adams is leading the Lakers in scoring average with 15.8 points per game. Adams has scored in double figures in eight of his 10 games played this season, including four games with at least 20 points.
Sophomore forward Rog Stein leads the team in rebounds per game (8.3), assists per game (3.8) and steals per game (1.8), while averaging the second-most points per game (14.9).
By the Numbers
Lake Superior State is averaging 81.6 points per game of offense compared to 78.1 by its opponents. LSSU is shooting 49.0 percent from the field, including 38.9 percent from three-point range. LSSU is limiting its opponents to 45.7 percent shooting and 37.1 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Lakers are averaging 16.9 assists per game compared to 12.3 turnovers.
Scouting Northern Michigan
Northern Michigan (8-5, 3-3 GLIAC) enters Thursday's game with Lake State on a four-game losing streak, including a 67-60 loss at No. 6 Ashland on Saturday.
The Wildcats, who are averaging 74.9 points per game on 46.8 percent shooting, including 38.7 percent on three-point shots, are led in scoring by Isaiah Johnson (23.1 points per game) and Naba Echols (18.2).
Scouting Michigan Tech
Michigan Tech (7-6, 2-4 GLIAC) is 3-2 in its last five games played, but went 0-2 last week as it lost at No. 6 Ashland 67-44 on Thursday and at Wayne State 67-54 on Saturday.
The Huskies are scoring 63.2 points per game on 41.2 percent shooting, including 37.2 percent from three-point range. Bryan Heath and Dawson Bilski are Michigan Tech's leading scorers with 13.2 and 13.1 points per game, respectively.
