SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Rog Stein scored a career-high 27 points, but Lake Superior State men's basketball suffered a 91-83 setback to Northwood in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
Stein, a sophomore forward, scored 27 points on 12-of-15 shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and for a double-double. The 27 points are a new collegiate best for Stein – surpassing his previous career high of 16, which he has achieved five times as a Laker.
Junior guard Malek Adams also scored 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting with two made three-pointers. Adams eclipsed 20 points for the third consecutive game.
Lake Superior State (4-4, 2-2 GLIAC) was outscored 40-35 in the first half. The Lakers led by as many as seven points, including when they held a 19-12 lead with about 13:30 remaining in the half, but they were outscored 28-16 over the remainder of the period. In the second half, the Lakers remained within striking distance and cut the Timberwolves' lead down to three points with the score 65-62 and about 6:30 remaining in the game. However, the Lakers were outscored 26-21 the rest of the way as the game ended with the score 91-83 in favor of the Timberwolves.
The Lakers shot 53.8 percent from the field and 26.1 percent on three-point shots, while the Timberwolves hit 54.1 percent of their shots and 47.1 percent on three-pointers.
The Lakers made 7-of-10 free throw attempts, while the Timberwolves converted 17-of-24.
Lake Superior State made 5-of-5 from the free throw line, while Northwood converted 11-of-14.
Rebounds were 28-27 in favor of the Timberwolves.
Lake Superior State is back in action against Algoma University on Dec. 18 at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
