Lakers Suffer Setback to Screaming Eagles

Carson Manger was one of five Lakers to score in double figures

INDIANAPOLIS – Five Lakers scored double figures in points, but Lake Superior State men's basketball suffered a 110-88 setback to Southern Indiana in a nonconference neutral-site game played at the University of Indianapolis' Nicoson Hall on Friday afternoon.

Lake Superior State (2-2) was outscored by Southern Indiana (3-1) 46-29 in the first half of play. In the half, the Lakers shot 39.3 percent, including 36.4 percent from three-point range, while the Screaming Eagles shot 48.3 percent overall and 54.5 percent on three-point shots. Southern Indiana also made 12-of-13 free throw attempts in the first 20 minutes of play, while Lake Superior State converted on 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. Senior forward Blake Marquardt led the Lakers in scoring in the half with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the three-point line.

In the second half, the Lakers were unable to make a comeback as they were outscored 64-59 to make the final score 110-88. Lake State shot 58.1 percent from the field, while Southern Indiana shot 62.9 percent. The Lakers made 3-of-10 three-point shots in the half compared to 9-of-15 by the Screaming Eagles. Southern Indiana also held an 11-6 edge in made free throws in the period.

Both teams shot well in the game with the Lakers shooting 50.7 percent and the Screaming Eagles shot 56.3 percent. However, Southern Indiana made 15-of-26 from behind the three-point line, while Lake Superior State shot 7-of-21. At the free throw line, the Screaming Eagles converted 23-of-24 attempts and the Lakers made 9-of-13.

Southern Indiana turned the ball over 15 times, compared to 17 turnovers by the Lakers.

Five Lakers scored in double figures: junior guard Malek Adams (15 points), Marquardt (13), senior guard Carson Manger (12), sophomore forward Rog Stein (11) and freshman guard Justin Fischer (10). Manger led the Lakers in rebounding with seven, while Stein and Adams each tallied four assists. Marquardt led the Lakers in made three-point shots (3).  

Southern Indiana's Alex Stein scored a game-high 48 points on 15-of-19 shooting from the field. He made 6-of-8 three-point shots and converted 12-of-12 free throw attempts.

Lake Superior State returns to the court at Ashland on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Ashland, Ohio 

The Lakers will play their first regular-season home game against Saginaw Valley State University on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
