Men’s Basketball Moves to 2-0 with 67-58 Win Over Alaska Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Lake Superior State men's basketball defeated Alaska Anchorage 67-58 as part of the Seawolf Jamboree on Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Center.

Lake Superior State (2-0) outscored Alaska Anchorage (3-3) 25-18 in the first half. LSSU briefly trailed 9-7 with 11:27 remaining in the half, but the Lakers outscored the Seawolves 16-9 over the remainder of the period. The Lakers shot 11-of-35 (31.4 percent) from the field in the half, but they held the Seawolves to 6-of-28 (21.4 percent shooting). Seven different Lakers scored in the first 20 minutes of play, led by freshman forward Ashton Sherrell, who scored seven points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field with one made free throw.   

Lake Superior State held off Alaska Anchorage in the second half as they went on to win the game 67-58. The Lakers extended their lead in the first nine minutes of the second half — going up by 22 points with the score 56-34 with 10:48 remaining in the game. However, Alaska fought back with a 24-9 run to pull within seven points of Lake Superior State with the score 65-58 with 20 seconds remaining in the game. The Seawolves ran out of time and senior guard Tim Cairnduff hit two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to make the final score 67-58 in favor of the Lakers. 

Sophomore forward Rog Stein (16 points), Cairnduff (13) and Sherrell (13) all scored in double figures for the Lakers. A total of 10 Lakers scored in the game. 

Lake State shot 42.9 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent in the second half. The Lakers hit eight three-point shots, including six in the second half. 

Defensively, the Lakers limited the Seawolves to 35.6 percent shooting, including 32.0 percent on three-point shots. 

The Lakers outscored the Seawolves 32-24 in the paint.

The Lakers return to the court at the University of Indianapolis as part of the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
