Lakers play key home games against FSU and GVSU

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State men's and women's basketball teams continue their five-game homestands with key games against Ferris State on Thursday and Grand Valley State on Saturday.
The double-headers begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. All four games will be broadcast live on WSOO 1230 AM.
The LSSU men's basketball team, which is 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is taking a five-game win streak into its matchup with Ferris State (4-6 overall, 2-3 GLIAC). The Lakers lead the GLIAC North Division by a half game over Grand Valley State (8-2 overall, 3-2 GLIAC).
The Laker men began the month of January in impressive fashion, hitting a GLIAC record 22 three-pointers en route to a 102-74 victory over Saginaw Valley State last Saturday. Senior guard Mark Morse led the way with 29 points, including a single-game school-record nine three-pointers.
Lake Superior State is ranked second in the GLIAC in average points per game (78.1) and three-point field-goal percentage (.409). Morse, junior Scott Perkins and sophomore Micah Hudson are shooting a combined 48.2 percent (67-of-139) from behind the arc. Meanwhile, senior forward Tim VanOudhuesden is averaging 17.3 points per game with an inside-outside attack, and senior center Ryan Kuhl is contributing 14.7 ppg and 5.2 rebounds per game.
The Ferris State men, who have lost three of their last four home games, are led by 6-6 sophomore Justin Keenan (20.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and 6-2 junior Josh Young (17.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg). Defending GLIAC champion Grand Valley State is led by 6-4 sophomore Justin Ringler (13.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and 6-5 senior Pete Trammell (11.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg), but the Lakers have a very balanced offense. GVSU shoots a GLIAC-leading 53 percent from the field as a team and leads the conference in rebound margin. LSSU's five seniors are vying for their first-ever victory over Grand Valley.
The LSSU women's team, which is 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC, is relieved to be back on its home court after struggling through a 2-5 road stretch that spanned the entire month of December. The Lakers improved to 4-0 at home after cruising to an 83-37 victory over SVSU last Saturday. They play seven of nine games during the month of January in Cooper Gym.
Senior forward Jackie Armstrong is averaging 17.9 ppg to rank third in the GLIAC in scoring and has teamed with senior center Alyssa VanderWal to maintain a consistent post threat. VanderWal is averaging 11.3 ppg, and is ranked first in the GLIAC in field-goal percentage at .644 and fifth in rebounding at 8.1 rpg.
Armstrong, who has scored 20 or more points in six of her last nine games, is scoring 19.7 ppg against GLIAC opponents. That includes scoring only 12 points in 12 minutes of playing time against SVSU.
LSSU is among the league leaders in rebounds and is allowing opponents to shoot only 35.5 percent from the field, but the Lakers are ranked last in the GLIAC in turnover margin.
Ferris State (3-6 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) and Grand Valley (8-2 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) will be contrasting opponents. The Bulldog women are among the league's top-scoring teams, but rank 11th in points allowed (74.3). The Lakers rank eighth in scoring, but are allowing only 59.1 ppg. FSU's lone league victory was 74-64 at Grand Valley on Dec. 1. GVSU has won five games in a row since that loss.
Senior guard Teghan Thelan leads FSU in scoring, averaging 15.7 ppg and 4.4 rpg, and is followed by senior forward Caitlin Hutchison at 11.2 ppg and 4.3 rpg.
Senior forward Kim Wyngaard averages 14.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg, and freshman guard Emma Veach contributes 12.3 ppg and 5.6 rpg to lead GVSU.
