NCAA recognizes LSSU's top three-point field-goal shooting percentage

INDIANAPOLIS - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team is receiving an award from the NCAA after leading the nation in three-point field-goal percentage at the Division II level.

LSSU, which finished 22-9 in 2008-09, shot 43.1 percent from three-point range. Second-place Emporia State shot 42.6 percent, followed by Dallas Baptist at 42.2 percent.

Coach Steve Hettinga said LSSU's impressive percentage was a credit to his entire team working to take quality shots.

"Our guys don't force bad shots," Hettinga said. "Whether they are twos or threes, teams have to honor us all the way around."

Senior Mark Morse was ranked second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in three-point field-goal percentage at .486, while sophomore Micah Hudson was ninth (.426) and junior Scott Perkins was 12th (.417). Senior Mike Rader came off the bench to hit 51 percent from behind the arc.

"Our confidence grew as the season went on," Hettinga said. "Mark set a good foundation. "Scott and Garrett (Konuszewski) took it from there. At all times we had four guys on the floor who could hit threes. We never saw a zone but twice all year."

Hettinga gladly accepts the NCAA plaque on behalf of his team - he said, "I did will a couple of those shots to go in." But he's more proud of his team's assist/turnover ratio of 1.43, which ranked fourth nationally. While he didn't get credit for it in the GLIAC statistics, Konuszewski had the league's best assist/turnover ratio of 2.63. LSSU's entire starting lineup posted a positive ratio.

"This means the team limited its turnovers and had a high percentage of sharing the ball and creating great shots," Hettinga said. "Our field-goal percentage is a reflection of that. That is a huge improvement from where we were before."
