Laker Track and Field Compete at Chippewa Challenge

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) track and field program competed at the Chippewa Challenge on Saturday.

Ava Donmyer (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) threw for a personal record of 27.78m in the women's javelin to place first overall in the event. Paige Johnson (Eckerman, Mich.) and Janelle Docter (Howard City, Mich.) also earned top-ten finishes in javelin with respective distances of 24.32m and 18.36m.

Docter picked up another top-ten finish in the Hammer throw with a toss of 39.04m for seventh place, and both Docter and Kennedy Konkle (Oxford, Mich.) placed in the top-15 in the discus throw with respective tosses of 27.96m and 26.07m.

Donmyer, Johnson, and Maddi Gould (Sanford, Mich.) also placed in the top-15 of the shot put, led by a distance of 10.00m from Donmyer.

Lindsey Tonello (Cadillac, Mich.) notched a fourth place showing in the long jump with a distance of 4.94m, and Keira Lamming (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) earned a fourth place finish of her own after clearing a height of 1.45m in the high jump.

Both of the Laker women's relay units placed in the top five with the 4x100 team of Haley Howe (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Brooke Brazeau (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Lamming, and Tonello placing third with a time of 53.13, and the 4x400 unit of Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Tonello, Howe, and Lamming finished fourth with a time of 4:30.97.

Brazeau, Lamming, And Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) each finished in the top-ten in the 400m hurdles with respective times of 1:12.84, 1:13.13, and 1:15.71 with Brazeau and Kapushinski's times being new personal bests. 

Kapushinski went on to set another new personal record on the day with a time of 11:56.05 in the 3000-meter run.

Nora Smoes (Reed City, Mich.) and Sarah McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) set new personal bests in the 1500-meter run with respective times of 5:42.67 and 6:04.86.

Mosher and Smoes earned new personal records in the 800-meter race with respective times of 2:36.45 and 2:52.43 with Mosher's being good enough for a top-ten placement.

Howe ran for a new personal best time of 1:04.60 in the 400-meter dash to place sixth, and Sofia Salazar (Valle del Cauca, Columbia) finished 7th in the 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 28.40.

Katie Woodruff (Grand Rapids, Mich.) rounded out the day for the women with a fifth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.66.

On the men's side, Trey Nieman's (Morenci, Mich.) personal best javelin throw of 39.56m earned him the first event win of his career. Meanwhile, Brayden Heemer (Tawas, Mich.) threw for a sixth place finish with a distance of 32.85m.

Nieman continued his strong outing with a distance of 40.62m for a third place finish in the hammer throw with senior Ryan Reiniche (Hillsdale, Mich.) close behind, placing fourth with a distance of 35.07m.

Reiniche also placed third in the discus throw with a toss of 41.46m and second in the shot put with a throw of 14.54m. 

Riley Traver (Hartford, Mich.) and Avery Timm (Petoskey, Mich.) notched top-five finishes in the jumping events with Traver clearing a height of 1.80m in the high jump and Timm leaping 6.06m in the long jump. 

The 4x400m relay unit of Michael Sherman (Boyne City, Mich.), Ryan O'Neill (Perry, Mich.), Roy Bowman (Jerome, Mich.), and Timm placed third in the event with a time of 3:42.95.

TImm would then go on to earn a 3rd place finish in the 110m hurdles with a personal best time of 15.96.

Bowman, Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.), and Ethan Meehle (Midland, Mich.) earned top-ten placements in the 1500-meter run with respective times of 4:17.12, 4:18.22, and 4:18.95 with the latter being a new personal record.

In the 800-meter run, Meehle, Jacob Kochanski (Alpena, Mich.) and Gary Haight (Charlevoix, Mich.) all set new personal records with respective times of 2:09.60, 2:17.99, and 2:23.48.

Sherman would then round out the day for the men with a fifth place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.04.
