Laker Track and Field Have Strong Showings at St. Norbert Easter Twilight

DE PERE, Wis. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) track and field program competed at the 2024 St. Norbert Twilight on Thursday.

Jenna Fleming (Hilton Beach, Ont.) opened up the outdoor season with a first place performance in the women's javelin throw with a distance of 44.86m, already reaching an NCAA DII provisional standard in her first meet of the season. Ava Donmyer (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) also went on to place fourth in the event to bring in five more points to her team with a personal record throw of 25.52m while Kennedy Konkle (Oxford, Mich.) threw for a new personal best of her own with a distance of 11.84m to place 9th and round out the event. 

Konkle was also able to score points in both the hammer and discus throws, with her fourth place worthy mark of 28.31m in the hammer throw setting another new personal record. Meanwhile, Janelle Docter (Howard City, Mich.) placed third overall in both the hammer and discus throws with respective distances of 31.17 and 30.72m.

Donmyer rounded out the day for the women's throwers with a fourth place showing in the shot put with a mark of 9.43m to score five more points for the Lakers.

In the women's jumping events, Lindsey Tonello (Cadillac, Mich.) was able to clear a distance of 4.87m in the long jump to place 7th overall while Keira Lamming (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) earned a second place finish in the high jump after leaping a personal record height of 1.5m.

Both of the women's relay units for LSSU were able to come away with points on the scoreboard. The unit of Haley Howe (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Brooke Brazeau (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Lamming, and Tonello finished third in the 4x100m relay with a time of 53.68, but it was the unit of Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Tonello, Lamming, and Howe that stole the show, finishing first in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:29.97.

Howe would also earn a new personal record in the 400-meter dash, placing seventh overall with a time of 1:05.92.

Mosher and Olivia Peter (Cass City, Mich.) each scored points in the 800-meter run, placing 4th and 8th in the standings with respective times of 2:43.34 and 2:46.60. Nora Smoes (Reed City, Mich.) and Julie Sheehy (Walkerville, Mich.) would also set new personal bests for the event.

Peter found herself scoring once again in the 1500-meter run with a personal best time of 5:38.69, and the trio of Smoes, Sheehy, and Sarah McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) also notched new personal records as well. 

Lamming and Brazeau rounded out the day for the women's team with respective placements of 2nd and 4th in the 400-meter hurdles with respective times of 1:13.10 and 1:20.65 with both marks being good enough for new personal bests.

On the men's side, Riley Traver (Hartford, Mich.) started off the day with an 8th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.99, and Michael Sherman (Boyne City, Mich.) placed 3rd in the 400-meter race after crossing the finish line with a time of 52.72.

Ethan Meehle (Midland, Mich.), Jacob Kochanski (Alpena, Mich.), Gary Haight (Charlevoix, Mich.), and Oliver Wisniewski (Berkley, Mich.) all set new personal bests in the 1500-meter run while Meehle tacked on an additional PR in the 800-meter race as well.

Avery Timm (Petoskey, Mich.) notched a new personal best time of 16.65 in the 110-meter hurdles which was good enough to place second overall. Meanwhile, Skylar Williams (Battle Creek, Mich.) also recorded points for his team in the 3000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:10.60.

In the men's jumping events, Traver earned a first place finish in the high jump after clearing a mark of 1.80m. Meanwhile, Timm notched second place finishes in both the long jump and the triple jump with respective distances of 6.48m and 11.87m.

Ryan Reiniche (Hillsdale, Mich.) had a first place showing in the shot put to open up the day for the men's throwers, throwing for a distance of 13.83m, and Ethan Ring (Fair Haven, Mich.) was also able to score points for LSSU in the event with a toss of 9.52m.

Ring and Trey Nieman (Morenci, Mich.) were also able to set new personal bests in the discus throw with Nieman earning a new personal record in the process, but it was Reiniche that once again had the top showing for the Lakers in the event, throwing for a distance of 42.11m to place second overall.

Neiman and Reiniche would then earn 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the hammer throw with respective tosses of 40.77m and 38.00m. Meanwhile, in the javelin throw, Nieman tacked on 6 more points for LSSU with a 3rd place worthy toss of 38.23m, and Brayden Heemer (Tawas, Mich.) also scored with a personal best throw of 34.90m to round out the day. 

The Lakers return to action on Friday, April 12 when they compete at the Central Michigan Invite.
