Lakers Participate in the 2020 "Wide-Track" Classic at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams took part in the 2020 "Wide-Track" Classic hosted by Hillsdale College on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Biermann Athletic Center in Hillsdale, Mich.

Among the Lakers who participated in the event, five athletes set at least one personal record in the meet. The Lakers also saw a number of first place finishes at the "Wide-Track" Classic.

Timothy Howes threw personal record distances in both the shot put and the weight throw. Howes' registered a distance of 11.28 meters in the shot put which surpassed his previous career best of 10.72 meters. In the weight throw, Howes posted a throw of 12.31 meters which is almost a meter better than his previous high of 11.38 meters. 

David Mitter placed first among all participants in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:45.01 which is his fastest time of the 2019-20 indoor season. 

With a time of 7.59, freshman Riley Nichols recorded a personal best time at the 60 meter dash. 

In the women's pentathlon, Elizabeth Setsuda had a strong showing for Lake State as she set a new personal record with 2498 total points in the competition. Setsuda had two first place finishes in the five events, with a time of 2:35.22 in the 800 meter run and a distance of 5.18 meters in the long jump. In addition, Setsuda also set a personal record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.01. 

Freshman Breanyl Baker also set a personal record in the 60 meter dash as she ran the distance in 8.16 seconds. 

In the weight throw, Sara Ostwald set a personal record in the weight throw with a distance of 13.35 meters which surpasses her previous career best of 12.63 meters that came on Dec. 6 at the SVSU Holiday Open. 

The Lakers will return to competition on Friday, February 21 for the GVSU Tune-Up Meet at Grand Valley State University.
