SAGINAW, Mich. - The Lake Superior State track & field teams competed in the Holiday Open hosted by Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Mich. on Friday, Dec. 6.
In her first ever pentathlon, Elizabeth Setsuda placed eleventh out of 12 competitors, posting a total score of 2398 points. Setsuda had solid finishes in the 800-meter run with a sixth place finish and a time of 2:35.72, fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.28 for a fifth place finish and fourth place in the long jump with 4.98 meters. Rounding out the five events, Setsuda's high jump performance was good for an eleventh place finish (1.37 meters) and her shot put throw totaled 5.65 meters for twelfth place.
Setsuda also competed in the individual long jump where she finished sixth with a distance of 5.08 meters.
Among the other solid finishers on the women's side were freshman Sarah Votruba, Brittney Ryan and Sara Ostwald.
Votruba placed fifth in the triple jump in her first collegiate meet as a Laker with a distance of 10.18 meters. Ryan's shot put throw was good for 11th place as she threw for a distance of 10.35 meters. In the weight throw, Sara Ostwald garnered an eighth place finish with a 12.63 meter distance throw in the competition.
On the men's side of the competition, freshman Riley Traver had a strong showing as he placed fifth overall in the men's 60-meter dash with a finish time of 7.33. Riley Nichols and Tyler Somerville also ran the 60-meter distance finishing with times of 7.61 and 7.80, respectively.
Andrew Giddens, who was one of the Lakers top finishers in the 60-meter hurdles last season, placed 15th among the participants with a time of 8.85.
The Lakers will be back in competition on Friday, January 17 at the Doug Hansen Open, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University, at the SVSU Fieldhouse in Saginaw, Mich.
