Lakers Compete at 2019 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. — The Lake Superior State track and field teams competed at the 2019 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

The Lake Superior State men finished eighth with 13.5 points, while the women's team garnered 5.5 points to finish 11th. Both finishes are improvements over last season's outdoor championships when the men tallied five points and the women garnered one point. The men's team score is its best since 2017 (23 points) and the women's score is its highest since 2015 (14 points).

On the men's side of the meet, junior Roger Willford finished fifth in the decathlon with 5,205 points to score four points for the team. He also scored another point for the Lakers with an eighth-place finish in the high jump (1.85 meters). In addition, he tied for sixth in the pole vault to score two and a half points for the team with a cleared height of 4.12 meters. In addition, Willford finished ninth in the javelin with a personal-best distance of 43.30 meters. His previous best was 31.05 meters, which Willford recorded at the Spartan Invitational on April 5-6.

Freshman Andrew Giddens also scored a point with an eighth-place finish with a time of 15.76 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles finals.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Willford, freshman Dwayne Thompson, senior Parker Wyngaard and Giddens finished in sixth place with a time of 43.92 seconds. Their finish scored Lake Superior State three points.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team earned two points with a seventh-place finish. The relay team, which consisted of Giddens, senior Travis Sutton, sophomore Luke Passino and Wyngaard finished with a time of 3:25.42.

Senior Zachery Workman ran a personal-best time of 10:34.70 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His previous personal best was 10:40.13, which he recorded at the Spartan Invitational on April 6-7, 2018.

Junior Jacob Thomann set a personal best in the javelin throw with a distance of 42.21 meters. His previous best of 36.10 meters was set at the GVSU Al Owens Classic on April 19-20.

Sophomore Kendal Delpiere garnered a personal-best time of 16:06.14 in the 5,000-meter run. His previous best was 16:32.64 at the Spartan Invitational on April 6-7, 2018.

In the 800-meter run, Passino finished in 10th place with a time of 1:58.14.

In the hammer throw, freshman Timothy Howes set an outdoor personal best in the hammer throw with a distance of 32.77 meters. 

On the women's side of the meet, sophomore Riley Collins tied for fourth in the high jump with a cleared height of 1.60 meters. The finish earned the Lakers three and a half points. 

The women's 4x100-meter relay team of senior Autumn Arseneau, Collins, senior Kelsey Mader and junior Elizabeth Setsuda placed seventh with a time of 51.66 seconds. Their performance earned the team two points.

Junior Rebecca Lathrop ran a personal-best time of 5:00.98 in the 1,500-meter run. Her previous best was 5:01.21, which she ran at the GVSU Al Owens Classic earlier this season.

Junior Sara Ostwald recorded personal records in the hammer throw (37.34 meters) and the discus throw (34.74 meters). She finished 13th in the discus throw. 

In the long jump, Setsuda finished 12th with a jump of 5.03 meters. 

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Collins, senior Lydia Heimonen, Setsuda and Lathrop recorded a season-best time of 4:12.46. Their previous season best was 4:13.62 at the Spartan Invitational. 

In the 800-meter run, Heimonen ran a season-best 2:22.41.
