Track and Field Has Strong Showing at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Lake Superior State women's and men's track and field teams had numerous student-athletes set personal bests at the Auto-Owners Spartan Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

On the women's side of competition, sophomore Riley Collins recorded a personal-best time of 1:00.57 in the 400-meter dash — surpassing her previous best of 1:00.82 from the GVSU Open on Jan. 25.

Sophomore Brittney Ryan recorded a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 10.52 meters. Her previous best was 10.41 meters at the SVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 2, 2017.

Alexis Passino, a sophomore, ran a personal best 5:12.09 in the 1,500-meter run — smashing her previous best of 5:32.28 that was set at last year's Spartan Invitational (April 6-7, 2018). 

Freshman Leah Bell improved her personal best in the 5,000-meter run for the second consecutive meet. After running 20:37.25 at the Miami Blizzard Buster on March 23, Bell turned in a time of 20:31.92 at this weekend's Spartan Invitational. 

Alyssa Mulford, a sophomore, also set a personal best — completing the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.35 to beat her previous best of 1:17.80 that was achieved at the Miami Blizzard Buster on March 23. 

Junior Sara Ostwald recorded a season best of 31.98 meters in the discus. Her previous best throw of the season was 30.13 meters at the Miami Blizzard Buster on March 23. 

On the men's side of the meet, sophomore David Mitter garnered a third-place finish in the seeded heat of the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:05 — the second-fastest time of his collegiate career.

Junior Roger Willford recorded personal bests in both the shot put (10.54 meters) and the javelin throw (41.05 meters). His previous personal bests in the shot put and the javelin were 10.27 meters (SVSU Jet's Pizza Invitational, Jan. 26) and 40.75 meters (St. Norbert Twilight Meet, March 29, 2018), respectively. 

Garett Smith, a senior, improved upon his personal best in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:06.74. His previous best was 4:06.83 at the Jim Cole Scottie Open on April 14, 2017.

Sophomore Peter Shambaugh also set a personal best in the 1,500-meter run — crossing the line in 4:09.74 to shatter his previous best of 4:34.25 (Spartan Invitational, April 6-7, 2018). 

Senior Zachery Workman set his season-best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:44.28, improving upon his time of 10:49.49 at the Miami Blizzard Buster on March 23.

Andrew Giddens, a freshman, improved upon his previous personal best in the 110-meter hurdles (15.90, Miami Blizzard Buster, March 23) with a time of 15.46.

Lake Superior State is back in action at the Al Owens Classic, hosted by Grand Valley State, in Allendale, Michigan on April 19-20.
