Lakers Set to Compete at 2019 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete at the 2019 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University, at the SVSU Fieldhouse in University Center, Michigan on Saturday and Sunday.

The championship gets underway with the women's pentathlon at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The men's side of the championship begins with the men's heptathlon at 10:25 a.m. The running events on the first day begin at 2:50 p.m. with if-necessary heats of the 5,000-meter run. Field events are slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. with the women's weight throw, women's pole vault, women's long jump and the men's long jump all beginning simultaneously.

On Sunday, the men's heptathlon resumes at 9 a.m., the field events start back up with the men's high jump and women's high jump at 10:30 a.m. and the running events restart with the final of the women's mile at 12:15 p.m. The final events of the championships, the women's 4x400-meter relay and the men's 4x400-meter relay, are slated for 2:50 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.  

On the men's side for Lake Superior State, junior Roger Willford enters the championship with the highest point total in the heptathlon by a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference student-athlete this indoor season. His point total of 4,761, which he achieved at the SVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 7, is the fifth-best performance in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region this season. The performance also earned Wilford an NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifier.

Sophomore David Mitter enters the meet with the 14th-fastest 3,000-meter run result in the GLIAC this season. Mitter ran a season-best time of 8:41.42 at the Jet's Pizza Invitational on Jan. 18.

On the women's side, sophomore Ashley Mullings has the fifth-best indoor long jump in the GLIAC this season. She jumped 5.43 meters at the GVSU Open on Jan. 25. Mullings' jump of 5.43 meters is the best indoor long jump by a Laker since Rebecka Knox recorded a jump of 5.45 meters at the GVSU Laker Early Bird on Nov. 30, 2012.

Sophomore Riley Collins, competing in her first season of indoor track and field at Lake State, comes into the weekend with the seventh-best high jump in the GLIAC this season. Collins cleared a height of 1.63 meters, her collegiate best, at the Doug Hansen Open, hosted by SVSU, on Jan. 18. Collins' jump of 1.63 meters is the best indoor high jump by a Laker since Rebecca Caruthers cleared 1.63 meters at the 2012 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 24, 2012.

In addition, the men's distance medley relay team, consisting of senior Garrett Smith, senior Travis Sutton, sophomore Luke Passino and Mitter, enters the meet with the fifth-fastest time in the GLIAC this indoor season (10:31.64) and the fastest time by a Laker distance medley relay team since the relay team that ran a time of 10:31.38 at the GLIAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 28, 2015..
