Lakers Compete at GVSU Open and Jet’s Pizza Invitational

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State Track and Field competed at the GVSU Open and the Jet's Pizza Invitational over the weekend.

At the GVSU Open, which was hosted by Grand Valley State University at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Michigan on Friday, sophomores Ashley MullingsRiley Collins and Peter Shambaugh recorded some of the top performances for the Lakers.  

Mullings finished third out of 25 competitors (who completed a jump) in the long jump with a season-best distance of 5.43 meters. Mullings also recorded a personal-best time of 8.22 seconds in the 60-meter dash to finish 16th out of 46 competitors. 

Collins, finished 13th out of 40 competitors in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 1:00.82.

Shambaugh garnered a personal best in the 800-meter run — finishing 13th out of 45 runners in 1:58.57.   

The Laker women's team finished 13th overall at the GVSU Open and the men's team came in 17th place.

At the Jet's Pizza Invitational, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University at the SVSU Fieldhouse in University Center, Michigan on Friday and Saturday, freshman Luke Passino, senior Travis Sutton and sophomore David Mitter each garnered top-five finishes. In addition, the men's distance medley relay team claimed a first-place finish. 

Passino and Sutton finished fourth and fifth, respectively, out of 23 competitors in the 800-meter run. Passino recorded the fastest 800-meter run of his collegiate career (1:57.29) and Sutton recorded a time of 1:58.37.

Competing in the 3,000-meter run for the first time this season, Mitter crossed the line in 8:41.42 to finish fifth out of 39 competitors.  

The men's distance medley relay team, consisting of senior Garrett Smith, Passino, Sutton and Mitter, cruised to victory with a time of 10:31.64 — 12.10 seconds ahead of the second-place team. 

The Lakers return to action at the Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State University, at the Kelly Family Sports Center on Feb. 8-9 in Allendale, Michigan.
