Track and Field Competes at 2019 Doug Hansen Open

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Lake Superior State track and field teams competed at the 2019 Doug Hansen Open, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University, on Friday at the SVSU Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Riley Collins, sophomore Ashley Mullings and senior Lydia Heimonen were the top Lakers on the women's side of the meet, while senior Travis Sutton, sophomore David Mitter and freshman Andrew Giddens had strong performances on the men's side.

Collins finished in a three-way tie for first place in the high jump with a personal-best height of 1.63 meters.

Heimonen recorded top-15 finishes in both the 800-meter run and the one-mile run. She finished 14th out of 49 competitors in the 800-meter run in 2:29.91. Heimonen placed 12th out of 55 in the one-mile run with a time 5:22.92 — less than one second off of her personal best (5:22.36), which was set at the SVSU Jet's Pizza Invitational on Jan. 27-28, 2017. 

In the long jump, Mullings recorded a distance of 5.25 meters to finish 5th out of 24 competitors. 

Competing in the 800-meter run, Sutton finished sixth out of 31 runners with a personal-best time of 1:57.69 — surpassing his previous indoor personal-best time (2:00.03), which was recorded at the SVSU Jet's Pizza Invitational on Jan. 27-28, 2017. 

Mitter garnered top-10 finishes and set personal bests in both the 800-meter run and the one-mile run. He finished ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.15 and he finished fourth out of 52 competitors in the one-mile run with a time of 4:22.28.

Giddens made the finals of the 60-meter hurdles — finishing eighth with a time of 8.86 seconds in the finals.   

The Lakers return to action at the GVSU Open, hosted by Grand Valley State University, at the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday in Allendale, Michigan.
