Laker men win home dual with Northwood

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State men's track and field team defeated Northwood, 71-53, while the Timberwolves won the women's meet, 74-53, during a dual held Saturday at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center.
Junior Katie Scott won the women's mile in a school-record 5:12.67, while senior Adam Smith took the men's 800-meter run in 1:54.28 and met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time.
"This is a school record that Katie has been within five tenths of a second several times," LSSU coach Steve Eles said. "Interestingly, she broke the record with little competition. Katie is currently ranked fifth in the country in the women's 5K with her time of 17:28.44 (set Dec. 13 at Grand Valley State). We ran Adam in a controlled fast pace and we were happy to see him hit the national standard."
Other first-place finishers for the Laker men were Dana Skytta in the high jump (1.83m), who beat teammate John Preczewski on misses, Ben Tarbutton in the 3,000-meter run (9:14.69) and the mile (4:27.11), and DJ Battistella in the 400-meter dash (:50.90). Tarbutton beat teammate Luke Allen at the finish line in the mile.
Top finishers for the LSSU women were Taylor Patton in the high jump (1.57m) and Kayla Nowak in the 3000-meter run (11:48.02).
