Several Lakers set personal bests at UNF Spring Break Open

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Distance runners Ben Tarbutton and Luke Allen led a host of Lake Superior State athletes who hit personal bests during Friday's first day of competition at the University of North Florida Spring Break Open.

Tarbutton placed fourth in the men's 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:53.93, which was a 15-second improvement upon his best time. Allen beat his personal record in the 5,000-meter run by 27 seconds while placing 16^th in 15:44.10. Patrick Wright was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.44 meters.

Other personal bests were set by Richard Gibson in the men's 800-meter run, Lucas Pease and Dion Tchokreff in the men's 5,000-meter run, and Sean Vardy in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. LSSU coach Steve Eles noted that all of the Laker freshmen competing in the hammer and javelin throws also hit PRs.

"We are happy with the way we finished today after a long, hard and productive week of practice," said Eles, who took his team to Florida for spring training in preparation for this weekend's outdoor season opener. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow. We are looking at another great day of weather and hopefully some additional great results."
