Lakers split squad, heading to Ferris State and Duke
BIG RAPIDS - Freshman Laura Lindsey set a new school shot put record to lead the Lake Superior State track and field team at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational held Saturday. Two Laker athletes also met NCAA qualifying standards at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
Lindsey set a new LSSU mark of 12.38 meters (40-7 ½) to win the women's shot put and won the javelin with a 31.53-meter throw. Taylor Patton was also a double winner, taking the high jump (1.61m) and the triple jump (10.70m). Amanda Pieczynski placed first in the women's 100-meter dash (:13.02).
Laker Patrick Wright claimed the men's long jump (6.55m) and triple jump (13.35m). LSSU also placed first in the men's 4x400-meter relay (3:27.55).
At Durham, N.C.: Senior Katie Scott placed third in the women's 10,000-meter run and 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase against a Division I field at Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium. Freshman Ben Charbonneau was fourth in the men's javelin, breaking his own school record with a throw of 59.98 meters (196-09).
"Katie Scott placed third in the 10,000 meters in her first ever race at such a distance," LSSU coach Steve Eles said. "I was impressed with Katie's debut in the 10K. She broke the school record by 72 seconds and also achieved the NCAA Provisional mark."
Scott ran a time of 37:13.21 in the 10,000-meter run on Friday. She placed seventh in her heat and 10th overall in the steeplechase held Saturday. Scott's steeplechase time of 11:06.65 ranks sixth nationally in Division II.
"I was also pleased with Ben's performance," Eles said. "He improved from our last meet where he had already met the NCAA Provisional Standard. Ben's throw improved him from ninth to fifth on the national list."
