Lakers compete at DII Challenge

ALLENDALE - Junior Katie Scott bettered her one-mile run school record for the third straight time and senior Adam Smith was one of two competitors who broke the 400-meter dash meet record to highlight Lake Superior State's performances at the DII Challenge held Saturday in the Laker Turf Building at Grand Valley State.
Scott, who also competed in the mile during Friday's GVSU Open, clocked a personal best 5:08.13 to place seventh in an extremely fast race on Saturday. Ferris State's Mikinzie Stuart won the event in a meet-record time of 4:57.27.
Smith was the second-fastest of two runners to better the 400 dash meet record. He clocked a :48.28, just missing his school-record time of :48.20 set at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Nationals. Findlay's John Guagenti won the event in :47.91. The NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time is :48.75.
LSSU's Taylor Patton placed fourth in the women's triple jump (33-6), and Katie Winiarski tied for fifth in the high jump (5-3) and placed seventh in the triple jump (31-10 ¾).
Patrick Wright finished third in the men's triple jump (43-1), while Ben Tarbutton was fourth in the 5,000-meter run (15:09.21). Dana Skytta tied for sixth in the high jump (6-3 ½).
