35 LSSU athletes earn GLIAC All-Academic honors

BAY CITY - Thirty-five Lake Superior State University winter sport athletes were named to the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
The list included 22 LSSU indoor track and field members.
The top men's track and field members included senior middle distance runner Luke Allen (Manistee, Mich.), with a 3.813 grade point average in political science, and senior Adam Smith (Mount Pleasant, Mich.), with a 3.341 GPA in mechanical engineering. Other honorees included sophomores Lucas Pease (Bellevue, Mich.) and Alex Gustafson (Rapid River, Mich.), juniors Jake Hoover (Capac, Mich.) and Paul Davis (St. Ignace, Mich.), and seniors Thomas Thornton (Sand Lake, Mich.), Ben Tarbutton (Gaylord, Mich.), Dana Skytta (Michigamme, Mich.) and Andrew Benson (Goodrich, Mich.).
Top honors for the women's track and field team went to Amanda Pieczynski (Posen, Mich.), a junior with a 3.9 GPA in exercise science, and fellow junior teammate Emily Bowen (Reed City, Mich.), with a 3.894 GPA in nursing. Other top female student-athletes included sophomores Chelsea Kreft (Rogers City, Mich.), Kimberlee Booms (Harrison, Mich.), Heather Millard (Plainwell, Mich.) and Mary McLeod (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), and juniors Sarah Christilaw (Midland, Mich.), Katie Scott (Mitchell, Ont.), Taylor Patton (Northwood, Ohio), Alyse Smith (Clayton, Mich.), Courtney Smith (Mio, Mich.) and Sara Hess (Owosso, Mich.).
Junior guard Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio), with a 3.503 GPA in liberal arts, and sophomore forward Matt Romatz (Pickford, Mich.), with a 3.103 GPA in liberal arts, represented the men's basketball team on the all-academic list.
Six women's basketball members received recognition. They were led by seniors Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale, Mich.) and Jaclyn Armstrong (Haslett, Mich.), who are both third-year recipients. Other women's basketball players receiving honors were sophomores Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.), Allison Jaynes (Dayton, Ohio) Jill Walton (Kingsley, Mich.) and Ronlea Peterson (Midland, Mich.)
