Mike Gugin enters his second year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Lake Superior State hockey team in 2020-21.

Gugin is involved in all aspects of the daily operations of the coaching staff, assists in hockey operations, and manages organizational film analysis and breakdown.

In Gugin's first season with the Lakers, the team posted a 14-23-4 overall record and a 11-14-4 mark in conference play, qualifying for the WCHA playoffs.

Gugin joined the Lakers staff in the summer of 2019 having previously served as a graduate assistant coach with the Ohio University hockey team (ACHA Division I), where his repsonsibilities included leading recruiting coordination across North America, organizing practices, and assisting in planning travel, meetings, etc. The team finished second in the regular season league (CSCHL) standings and nationally ranked fourth overall while making a national tournament quarterfinal appearance.

Before his role at Ohio University, Gugin served as an assistant coach for the Lawrence University (NCAA Division III) hockey team in Appleton, Wisc. Gugin's job responsibilities included organizing skill practice sessions with forwards and defensemen, coordinating video set up and tactical film breakdown, recruiting prospective student-athletes, and assisting with academic oversight. Gugin was a member of the team's staff during a NCHA quarterfinal playoff appearance and coached the program's first ACHA All-American. 

Gugin has also served as an assistant coach for the Glacier Nationals in the NA3HL based in Havre, Mont., where he managed daily operations including budgeting and sponsorhsip sales, trained players in an off-ice conditioning program and assisted in player development. Gugin's experience inlcudes serving as Head Junior Varsity/Assistant Varsity Coach for the Lowell Caledonia High School hockey team in Kentwood, Mich. 

As a player, Gugin was a member of the Northland College NCAA Division III hockey team as well as Aquinas College's ACHA team. Gugin served as the captain of the first team in Aquinas' program history. 

Gugin holds a Master's Degree in Sport Recreation and Coaching Education from Ohio University (2019) and a Bachelor's Degree in Administration and Sport Management from Aquinas College (2015).

An Ishpeming, Mich. native, Gugin currently resides in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
