Hundreds are expected to participate in LSSU's first Women's Walk

SAULT STE. MARIE - More than 500 women are expected to participate in the first Lake Superior State Women's Walk, a fund-raiser for LSSU women's athletics that begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Norris Center.

The 30-minute walk through LSSU's campus is a low-key activity for women of all ages and athletic abilities. The impact of the event is far-reaching in terms of numbers of participants and potential to financially support the LSSU women's volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, golf, cross country and track teams.

"Sept. 12th will be a great day for women's sports, and I can't wait to see how this first-time event takes off," said LSSU assistant women's basketball coach Shannon Eggers, who began organizing the event last spring. "Our women's walk so far has raised close to $5,000, and we're still waiting on a lot more entries and money to come through."

Eggers first participated in a women's walk when she played basketball at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

"Now being able to contribute back to Lake State what I was taught a few years ago really gives me a greater appreciation of how small donations can add up," Eggers said. "Our athletes and our programs will benefit most, but bringing the women's sports teams together for a celebration of our athletic programs is what this is all about."

Eggers participated in the UNO Women's Walk, which began with 86 walkers in 1986. Today the UNO event includes 1,000 participants and major sponsors who donate approximately $200,000 annually.

"I know that our event will get to the status of some other women's walks," Eggers said. "For now we are excited to bring a new fund-raiser and new ways to celebrate our Laker athletes and programs."

Primary sponsors of LSSU's first Women's Walk are O'Connor's Chrysler, Dodge & Jeep, Autore Oil (BP), Hantz Group, Print & Marketing Solutions and The Oaks.

Players, coaches and friends of the LSSU women's teams recruited team captains who formed teams that set a minimum fund-raising goal of $500. All walkers are eligible to win special prizes. Teams were required to pre-register by Aug. 18. However, late registrants can join teams by contacting Eggers, 906-635-2368, or the Norris Center Ticket Office, 906-635-2602.

The walk will be held in conjunction with Saturday's Bud Cooper Golf Classic, which begins at 11 a.m. at Sault Country Club and also benefits LSSU women's athletics.
