Laker Athletics Announces 2018-19 GPA of 3.155

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University Athletics announces that the cumulative weighted grade point average for all student-athletes for the 2018-19 academic year is 3.155. This is an improvement from the 3.112 weighted GPA that Lake State student-athletes garnered for the 2017-18 academic year and reflects upon the continued gradual improvement in recent years (3.084 in 2016-17 and 3.056 in 2015-16).

Student-athletes were above the campus average GPA of 2.95 for the 2018-19 academic year.

Hockey led all sports with a 3.419 GPA, followed by men's golf (3.399 GPA), women's tennis (3.384), women's golf (3.379), women's varsity basketball (3.328) and volleyball (3.255).

About 64% of all LSSU student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or better in 2018-19.

Laker hockey recorded a significant improvement in 2018-19 with its 3.419 GPA (3.413 in fall 2018 and 3.426 in spring 2019). During the 2017-18 academic year, the hockey team posted a 3.042 weighted GPA, broken up as 3.13 in the fall and 2.94 in the spring. In 2018-19, five LSSU hockey players recorded a 4.0 GPA in either the spring or fall semesters.

Volleyball also garnered a significant improvement in average GPA – increasing from 2.97 in 2017-18 to 3.255 in 2018-19.

"This is a nice achievement for our student-athletes as we continue to trend upward in the classroom as well as on the field of play," said Dr. David Paitson, Director of Athletics. "Our student-athletes are taking advantage of the unique skills provided through participation in intercollegiate athletics, such as understanding the value of the team dynamic, as well as competencies built through their academic degrees. It is a winning combination that positions them well for life after college."
